Search and Rescue of Texas

K-9 Search and Rescue of Texas (K-9 SAR TX) is a nonprofit search and rescue team serving the greater Houston and Texas Gulf Coast region. They are a group of dedicated volunteers that along with their canine partners assist responsible agencies in the search for and recovery of lost and missing persons. In addition, through their community education program they strive to inform the public on how to avoid becoming lost and what to do if it happens. |
Their members come from many different backgrounds, but all bring a strong commitment to their mission and the community.
Handlers and canines are required to maintain a high level of training. Canines are tested to insure a friendly and stable temperament as well as the ability to search.
K-9 SAR TX currently has handlers and canines training in these areas:
Air scenting
Tracking/trailing
Cadaver and article search

Air Scenting - These dogs search for any human scent in a given area. They usually work off lean and can cover a large area quickly. Tracking/trailing - These dogs search, using a scent article, for a specific individual by following the path of that person. Cadaver - Cadaver dogs are used to locate human remains. When searching for an article, the dogs are looking for clues to aid in the search. |

The Organization
We are a Texas nonprofit corporation formed in September 2000. K-9 SAR TX received its 501(c)3 designation from the Internal Revenue Service in November 2000. The Team is a member of the National Association for Search and Rescue. We do not charge for the services we provide. There are no paid employees. Our volunteers are not paid for their work. Currently each volunteer bears the cost of their personal training, their search gear, as well as the costs associated with the care and training of their canine partners. Private donations of funds, supplies, services and equipment are their only outside resources. They welcome your support.
