The
August 1993 cover of Pets Magazine prominently displayed a beautiful, vivacious
and energetic black Cocker Spaniel whom they labeled, “Blushing Molly
- - Flyball Star!” The photo is from the Astro World Series of Dog Shows,
and Molly truly was a star. In the words of her owner, and best friend, Lee
McCuistion, “Molly is my soul mate. I have asked her who will look after
me after she is gone, because she walked every step I did and nothing escaped
her, ever! In the end, lung cancer caught up with her, and I chose not to allow
her to suffer anymore.”
In the words of Doug McGuire, a long time friend of Molly and Lee’s, “Molly runs flyball with the passion of a Border Collie, hunts like a Labrador and protects her territory like a Rottweiler.” Lee says, “That about sums her up!” Personally, I had the joy and pleasure of seeing Molly run in flyball competition at the dog show in Houston as well as see her serve as a “pickup” dog at Brazosport Retriever Club’s Hunting Tests. She leapt into the water like the finest Lab you’d ever seen, swiftly swam (with big black, curly, fluffy ears flapping on top of the water) to the duck, picked it up promptly, turned around immediately and swam straight back to Lee. It was something many of us had never seen but we were both respectful and appreciative of Molly’s desire, skill and obvious display of enjoyment when she very neatly delivered the duck to hand. Molly tolerated obedience, learned to like agility “ok,” but she loved to hunt and her passion was flyball. She lived and breathed for flyball, and she ran her heart out every run.
As Lee has so aptly stated,
“Sleep well, my little black Molly. May your retrieves be many and may
there always be a flyball tournament in your honor!” To that, we all say
“Amen” and Molly, thanks for the memories!
